Brought the blue up a little and a highlight on the red. Cleaned up the metallics a bit as well
Beginner Mastodon PSA - Culture (long)
Alright since I've had to introduce my wife to this lately I thought I may as well help other people new on here with a post explaining some basic stuff about how mastodon culture works as well as basics around how posts propagate.
Basic Twitter to Mastodon dictionary:
Retweet -> Boost
Tweet -> Toot (post)
silence -> mute
suspend -> block
some community slang:
ec -> eye contact (used in cws that include eye contact with camera)
mh -> mental health
It is good practice to add a Content Warning to any posts about things which are triggering, but here are some additional CWs that are good practice
uspol/pol -> politics
food (not veg/vegan) -> food (additional CW for stuff that isn't vegetarian or vegan is nice too)
lewd/nsfw -> from anything even mildly flirty to outright porn
family -> family stuff
drugs/alcohol/ -> substance use that others may be sensitive about due to personal history
mh -> mental health, usually depression/anxiety
ec -> post contains a picture that has eye contact with the camera
boosts -> whether its okay to reshare this (followed by a + or -)
and then on top of those adding a +,-,~ to the CW to let people know whether the post has a good, bad, or neutral tone (so they can choose whether they want to see it when they are in a bad mood for example).
Using text scramblers or leetspeek is generally rude to people using screen-readers, so please avoid doing this. If you do use it, put it behind a CW telling people that it is unfriendly to screen readers.
Add captions to your pictures (click on them when writing your post) for similar reasons to above.
Make sure to add info to your bio including:
- languages you speak
- age (over/under 18)
- relationship status / if flirting is okay
- enough info to clue people in that you aren't just some liberal techbro
There are different types of posts on here:
- Public (the globe) - anyone can see and boost it
- Unlisted (unlocked lock) - anyone can see and boost it, but it doesn't show up on your personal TL, only the public one.
- Private (locked lock) - only your followers can see it and it can't be boosted (good for lewds)
- Direct - direct message visible to anyone you @ in the post
generally you should judge posts by the number of boosts they have rather than favorites, since for some reason favorites are notorious for not propagating well over the network. You can still accurately tell how many faves your own posts get, though.
Read people's bios and pinned posts before you follow them or send them a follow request, it is just common courtesy. Try not to spam follow requests when you've already been denied (this is admittedly difficult, though, since the UI doesn't tell you if you have tried to follow before and been denied, only whether you have a pending follow request with them). You can choose to manually approve new followers in the same way in your account settings, which allows you to control who sees your private-level posts.
If you hadn't noticed, you can use custom emojis supported by your instance in almost any text field, just type the shortcode for it between two colons like :nonexistant_emoji: .
Make sure to go into your settings and backup your followers and followed lists every once in a while, this way if you migrate instances you can reupload them to your new account for a fairly seamless transition. Instances are often community supported, so consider donating to the admins to cover hosting costs so you hopefully don't have to migrate in the event of your instance being shutdown.
The poll feature is a meme, but you can also make poll have multiple answers enabled rather than just one and since people can't sed results unless they vote (or the poll ends), add an extra option for "see results".
And finally, unlike other garbage sites, the timeline is actually chronological. The only filters on your feed are ones added by the admins, usually to block instances which are ran by and/or willingly host nazi/TERF content in the name of "free speech".
have fun on fedi!
